Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes Redwall Retrievers unique?

At Redwall, we specialize in British-line Labrador Retrievers bred from exceptional European field-trial bloodlines. Our dogs are calm, intelligent, and highly trainable—making them ideal for both the home and the field.

2. What’s the difference between American, British, and English Labradors?

Though all are Labrador Retrievers, each type has distinct traits in build, energy level, and purpose. Here’s a quick comparison:

American Labrador (Field Lab)

  • Appearance: Tall, lean, athletic

  • Temperament: High energy, independent, driven

  • Best for: Field trials, hunting, very active families

British Labrador (Our Specialty)

  • Appearance: Compact, balanced, strong build

  • Temperament: Steady, biddable, calm but capable

  • Best for: Hunting, hunt tests, family companions

English Labrador (Show Lab)

  • Appearance: Blocky head, thick coat, heavier build

  • Temperament: Calm, gentle, easygoing

  • Best for: Show rings, therapy work, laid-back homes

3. Does coat color affect temperament or health?

No, temperament is shaped more by breeding and training than color.

4. What can I expect from a Redwall puppy?

Our British Labradors are bred to be affectionate family members and steady hunting companions. They’re eager to please, easy to train, and adaptable to a wide variety of homes and lifestyles.

5. Can British Labs compete in hunt tests and field trials?

British Labs can absolutely compete in hunt tests and perform very well. Their steady temperament and strong natural retrieving instincts make them excellent for both AKC and UKC hunt test formats.

However, they are not specifically bred for American-style field trials, which often require extreme speed, independence, and intensity. If your primary goal is to be highly competitive in field trials, there are other Labrador lines better suited for that purpose. At Redwall, we prioritize biddability, calm drive, and versatility—traits that make British Labs ideal for the field, home, and hunt test venues.

6. Should I choose a male or female puppy?

There’s no “better” choice—both males and females can be wonderful companions. Temperament is shaped by breeding and early training. We’re happy to help match you with the right puppy for your needs.
